Up, Up and Away: Superman Soars at Pickwick!

Thank you to everyone who supported our screening of Superman: The Movie at the Pickwick Theatre. December 15 was the 43rd anniversary of the film’s premiere. We are glad that roughly 200 people came out on such a windy day with gusts over 60 mph. It was an unseasonably warm day in Park Ridge with temperatures in the mid-60s.

The theatre was literally booming with the sounds of Superman. To see it in the Mega-Theatre is a unique experience, and it makes one appreciate not only the John Williams’ film score, but the movie’s overall sound design as well– courtesy of the Pickwick’s updated sound system.

The first 50 patrons received an art print commemorating the screening at the Pickwick. This artwork was courtesy of Czech artist Pavla Koudelkova.

Thank you to Movie Hostess Beka, returning Hostess Allison, and assistant Jessica. A huge thank you to Jay Warren, who returned to perform the pre-show music on the Mighty Wurlitzer. The highlight was hearing the “Superman March” played on the organ. And thank you to Kathryn and the Pickwick Theatre staff.

This screening was in honor of director Richard Donner, who passed away in 2021. We are grateful to all those who experienced the film for the first time and shared their thoughts with us in the lobby afterward. One of the older patrons commented on the film’s values which, by comparison, are lacking in most commercial blockbusters today. Finally, in the group email that had gone out, we specifically mentioned the opening credits and how amazing it would look on our immense screen. As it turned out, one of the patrons in the audience shared with us that he knew the gentleman responsible for those titles, Richard Greenberg.
